I've been blogging elsewhere...

In case you wondered, I am blogging still. Everyday actually. See below!

HoopPretty is my latest project and it's keeping me pretty busy these days. Actually trying to lose 20lbs before June 7! So I'm blogging daily about my progress. It's been a fun ride. Join me if you wish.

News | HoopPretty : printed goods for those who heart the hoop

I've been away for quite a while. Sorry about that. But I have an announcement!

What I've been up to is something I'm very passionate about and am now able to tell you more about it. Right now it's a small seed, but hopefully will grow into a garden. (To state it very cornily.)

HoopPretty is a project I've been working on with my sister, Rachel, who is also a Surface Designer. It's always been a dream of mine to work together and come up with a business that we both can be excited about.

The idea came to us during a hoop dance class which my friend Anna teaches. Rachel had made the cutest shirt with adorable hooping monkeys on it and everyone in class loved it and wanted one. I had also been in the process of designing my own hoop dance themed shirt and right then and there the idea was born!

I did some researching + subsequent testing and so far the response has been great!

We now have HoopPretty.com opened up for business with more hoop dance themed apparel, accessories and goodies to come!

"Wilhemina the Hooping Mermaid" was our first design. She may look familiar. :) We've been wearing these shirts out! The aqua color is amazingly energizing.

This summer we'll be in a hoop troupe, called the HoopFreaks. And we'll be performing at PrideFest in Milwaukee. I will announce more about when exactly we'll be performing on the HoopPretty blog. Performing at PrideFest is a pretty big deal - most performers offer to perform for free because the honor to perform there is so enticing. It's a great venue. And our first time actually performing! Eeek! We're all very excited about it! Our costumes should be awesome. :)

If you are unaware of what hoop dance is (as most people I've mentioned this to are) it's true it makes use of a "hula hoop" however now the hula hoop has evolved into a heavier weighted hoop basically made of irrigation tubing and covered with pretty sparkly tape. Looks like a kid's play toy but is a great tool for exercise, meditation, and performing. My friend Anna makes and sells hoops of all shapes and sizes.

If you did a search for "hooping" on YouTube you will find a myriad of videos with people doing some amazing tricks with a hoop. It's not just for the waist anymore, folks!

www.hoopcity.ca is another great resource. It's like Facebook, but for hoop dancers and people interested in flow arts (poi, fire hoop, etc).

Also I just saw this video last night and am so awed. It's a Cyr wheel.  Hooping, but on a grander scale. This performer is from Cirque du Soleil. I'd like to learn to do that, but I wouldn't even know where to go to learn!

Alan the Gallant : Pattern + Humor

I love the cheeky intro to this surface designer's "pattern" portfolio. Alan the Gallant is a multi-talented design bureau based in Barcelona and directed by Ana Montiel. And they're very entertaining. Very entertaining, indeed!

About Alan’s creative life.

A never-ending curiosity and lust for life allows Sir Alan to constantly evolve and be immersed in new design paths and directions, working with diverse mediums, objectives and materials for our clients; a Renaissance man with a dandy tie collection.

A porcelain cup, an artistic installation, a patterned ornament for a building façade, a fashion capsule collection; Alan is able to create this and more without putting a hair out of place.

There are no limits for a man of world and taste.

Sir Alan is a free interpretation of a contemporary gallant from the 21st century.

Haha I just love that description. Also the description on the front page is a most enjoyable read. If only all designer's insight into their reason-for-being were this clever and interesting to read... what a story!

Below are some more great designs. I love the graphic nature of these patterns, but somehow it doesn't come off stiff, but very delicate and soft.

All amazing work! Thanks for the inspiration, Ana, Alan, whoever you are!
